Consolidating Items When Downsizing

Downsizing your home often means downsizing your belongings as well. Many people find the task of getting rid of belongings to be the most emotionally taxing part of the downsizing process. However, by starting early, staying organized and soliciting some help, you can make the process simple. Try the following steps:

Block out time  – Block out a couple days per week on your calendar to dedicate some time to going through your things. Pick a time of day to do this, decide how long you will spend, and make sure to stick to your plan.

Set a timer  – During your scheduled downsizing time, set a timer for an hour or two and see how much you can accomplish. This will allow you a predetermined amount of time to focus on the task without distractions.

Ask for help  – Ask a friend or professional to help you go through some of your things. An honest friend may be able to help you decide what to keep and what to give away, and a professional can lend advice on organizing and making the most of your new space.

Fill one trash bag per week  – Most people have many things they can throw away or donate. Set a goal to fill a trash bag each week to either throw away or donate to a local organization. Click  here  to schedule a donation pickup in your area.

Make some money  – If you have clothing, furniture or home décor that is gently used, consider selling it to make some extra money.  ThredUP  and  Poshmark  are great online clothing sale companies, and you can sell furniture through Facebook Marketplace and  craigslist.
